Emma Were - About me
I have been practising as a speech pathologist for 16 years, and am a Certified Practicing Member of Speech Pathology Australia. Since graduating from from The University of Sydney in 2000, I have worked in a range of settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools and home visiting services, in both Australia and the UK. During my career, I have been fortunate to support many different children and families and have gained vast experience working with a wide range of communication difficulties, including speech difficulties, language disorders and issues with fluency (stuttering). I also have a particular interest and specialism in supporting children with more complex communication needs and behavioural and sensory eating difficulties.
I am passionate about making a difference and absolutely love working with children. The following beliefs are what drive my professional practice:
# I believe therapy should be as enjoyable as it is effective. I constantly seek out current evidence and best practice principles to underpin any therapy plan I implement, and love bringing fun and passion to every session.
# I believe parents are the expert in their child - they know their child best – and that collaborative working between parents and a therapist achieves the best results.
# I believe every child is unique and special, and thus therapy should be individualised and tailored to specific needs of the child.
And lastly, together with my extensive professional experience, I enjoy bringing a deeper understanding and experience from all I have learnt nurturing and encouraging my own children to develop effective communication skills.
