Program Goals

Lego therapy was developed by Dan LeGoff, a clinical neuropsychologist in the United States, for autistic children, however it can also be helpful for a wide range of children with language and social communication difficulties.

Lego therapy is used to help children learn skills like turn-taking, sharing, listening, conversation, teamwork, shared attention and problem-solving. There are also countless opportunities to teach language concepts, following instructions, attention and listening skills, giving specific directions and building vocabulary.

Many, many children are highly engaged when playing with Lego -  it is lots of fun and the possibilities are endless! When children play with Lego together, they’re more likely to interact with each other through collaborative play. Lego can be extremely motivating for children, so even kids who are reluctant to come to therapy love Lego Club! Having a shared focus on building Lego together is strengths focused and helps kids practise communication and social skills while having fun.

What happens at Lego therapy?

A Speech Pathologist facilitates the Lego therapy group sessions, which are run for 2 hours, 3-4 days per week in the School Holidays.

Lego Building is made up of structured builds together with more freestyle building. Each participant takes on a specific role and these are swapped between participants throughout the session.

There’s usually:

●      an engineer, who has the instructions

●      a supplier, who has the bricks

●      a builder, who builds the model

The children take turns playing the different roles, and together they build the model. Towards the end of the session the children have some time to build whatever they want.
